What happens to scholarships at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) if DEI Programs disappear?
And your SCHOLARSHIP LIST 💰
As more schools and colleges face the pressures to eliminate DEI programs, Latino/a/e students want to know:
-Will this affect scholarship opportunities?
-What happens to financial aid programs designed for Hispanic/Latine students?
🔴 Here’s the current reality:
-HSIs still receive federal funding, so some institutional and government-backed scholarships will remain
-However, scholarships that are directly tied to DEI offices and/or initiatives could disappear OR be repackaged under different criteria(s)
🔴 What this means:
-A shift towards scholarships based on merit or income, rather than identity and representation
-Fewer culturally responsive financial aid resources
-Students may have to spend much more time searching for alternative scholarships and resources
🔴 What can first-gen and Latine students do:
-Apply to general institutional aid (not tied to DEI)
-Utilize community based and non-profit programs, to search for local scholarships
-Talk to your college financial aid office to learn more, and ask about your options
Lastly, if you are looking for 1-1 support, accountability, and guidance with applying to scholarships/grants join The Cafecito con Estrellita Membership. We have helped many of our students win up to $10,000 through our program.
